The West Texas A&M University Town and Gown Band was
organized in January, 2008. The name derives from the fact that
membership includes both members of the community and university
students. The idea for the band originated with WTAMU’s Dean of Fine
Arts and Humanities, Dr. James Rennier, who serves as timpanist in the
group. While a number of the 80-member ensemble are music educators in
the Texas Panhandle, many other professions are represented as well,
along with several WTAMU students.
The only requirements for membership are significant experience on a
wind or percussion instrument and being at least a high school
graduate. There are no dues.
Performances are held in Northen Recital Hall on the WTAMU campus. It
is anticipated that additional performances will be held in the future
at other venues in the Panhandle area.
The band’s inaugural concert on February 25, 2008 attracted a large and
enthusiastic audience. The band has begun fall rehearsals for the
2009-2010 season. Keep
checking the schedule page for more
information. The public is invited to all concerts and there is no admission charge.
